What is Multi-Factor Authentication?

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is an extra layer of security that makes it harder for hackers to access your account. Instead of just using a username/email and password, you’ll also need to verify your identity in at least one other way.

MFA typically relies on three types of factors:

  • Something you know – e.g. a password

  • Something you are – e.g. fingerprint, face recognition, or voice recognition

  • Something you have – e.g. a one-time code from an app

You’re probably already using MFA in your daily life, even if you haven’t thought about it. For example, MitID is a form of MFA that you use to log into Skat, your bank, and other services.

If you use Microsoft Office or Google Suite on your phone, you’ve also encountered MFA. These platforms don’t support MitID, so instead, you need to use a general MFA app on your phone. Typically, you log in with your username and password first, then enter a one-time code generated by your chosen MFA app. Since your phone itself is locked to you (e.g. via face recognition), this method adds maximum security.

The same method applies when logging into OnlineFundraising.

Recommended MFA Apps

If you already use an MFA app, stick with it! But if you’re new to MFA, here are some popular options that work in the same way:

Step-by-Step Setup Guide

  1. Download an MFA app of your choice to your phone.

  2. Link the app to your OnlineFundraising account – this process is the same for any app and will be the same if you need MFA for other services in the future.

Have you used OnlineFundraising before? Then your user has been migrated, and you only need to setup the link between your account and MFA. Start the process by going to Users > your user and clicking Setup Multi Factor Authentication

  3. The first time you log in, you’ll see a QR code on your screen. Open your chosen MFA app and scan it.

  4. Your app will generate a one-time code, which you’ll need to enter on the OnlineFundraising login page. Once that’s done, your app and profile will be linked.

  5. Logging in from now on: Enter your username and password first. Then, open your MFA app to get a new one-time code, enter it, and you’re in – but now with extra security!

If you ever want to change the MFA app you use, you’ll need to reset your MFA settings in OnlineFundraising first.
